What is “Sashiko”?

“Sashiko” is an embroidery technique in which lines are drawn with white thread on indigo-colored cloth, and has been popular in Japan since the early 16th century. This simple and beautiful stitching technique was born in the daily life. It is originally from people in mountains where logistics were scarce valued their clothes and applied stitches to their garments to withstand the extreme cold. Today, there are fewer Sashiko products that emphasize “reinforcement” and “protection against cold,” which are the original functions of Sashiko, but the traditional Sashiko pattern itself is still popular and utilized for bags and zabuton (cushions).
